It’s been a recent phenomenon for people to come meet me where I live at Uma Giri Kutir at Taptkund Mahadev Mandir. I have been coming here since 2015 and spending more and more time here since 2018. It’s in a small rural Himalayan Village called Saling, in Bageshwar District, Uttarakhand, in North India. While other foreigners have lived in the area in the past, currently I am the only foreigner staying in Bageshwar district. Slowly Slowly word has gotten around that there is a videshi (foreigner), अंग्रेजी मैडम (angrezi madam), who stays and takes care of this mandir property. So having heard about me, people come to meet me; occasionally YouTubers ask for an interview.

In this YouTube Nikol Giri interview I answer most of the typical questions asked of foreigners living in India:

How long have I been living here in India? When did I first arrive? Since when have I been living here at Taptkund Mahadev Mandir? How I learned Hindi? How do I support myself here? etc.

We also talk about the internet, social media addiction as a distraction from sadhana and local youth’s recent preoccupation with violent video games.</h3

I used to come up here when I wanted to disconnect from the internet. Early years I didn’t have network connection. Without the distraction of social media I was able to focus on my sadhana. Since the Covid19 Pandemic, the need for online school brought a stronger network connection in our village. After returning (post lockdown) in June 2021, it was the first time I saw so many teens with mobile phones. The network is stronger at Taptkund Mahadev Mandir than further up in the hills where most people live. Nearly everyday I see people coming to the mandir, not to pray, but to watch YouTube, check social media, or worse: play violent video games. It’s ironic to me.

We also talk about: simple living in rural Himalayas, care for the nature, keeping our environment clean, growing your own organic food, and local trekking destinations in the area.

I was super impressed to meet a local young woman, very professionally, running her own YouTube Channel: @Uttarakhandimomstudio. Her channel shares various aspects of her life in rural Kumaon.
